18-month average stay for youth pastors!

I'm not speaking this into any of your ministries - if you all have YP's that are a dream, I hope they stay for 20 years or longer!

But as for the one I work with, let's just say I could stand to trade up...

AARGH!!!  I love everything about my new church - except him!  I'm being graceful, "rising above it," and not letting him intimidate me (just found a copy of "Breaking Intimidation" in my church library, and I plan to start reading it today!).

I know that my work will speak for itself.  I get a lot more, "That's great!" than "What's going on with______?" in staff meetings, and it tends to be the opposite with him.  He's probably a little jealous about that.  But I refuse to feel guilty because I'm doing my job!

I'm tired of him telling me how I "should" be running my ministry - flapping his jaws, and then outright telling me (very snottily!) that he will NOT be present the day we put together the set for our Christmas play.   Fine.  I never asked him to be there in the first place.  But I will treat him the same way that I treat any church person who gives me unsolicited advice on how I "should" be doing something, and then refusing to lift a finger: ignore them!

I know he has his own ministry to run, and I shouldn't expect him to help me.  And I don't expect him to.  BUT HE SHOULD GET BUSY RUNNING HIS OWN MINISTRY!!!

Okay...I feel better now!! Sunday's sermon is done, and I'm off to read the wise words of John Bevere for awhile...

It's always hard when you have a staff member who is not a team player.  Unfortunately this will affect things for your SP until this YP hits the road.

We had a situation in our church previously with staff where the YP was just not a team player.  He had his own agenda and didn't flow with anyone else on staff, especially our CP.  Now let me say, our CP is awesome.  (In fact, he and his fam are having Thanksgiving with us tomorrow.  They are like family.)  If someone can't flow with our CP, they basically are a crazy person.  And his wife?  Let's put it this way, anyone who wouldn't flow with his wife you KNOW has big problems.  She's got to be the sweetest thing God created.  She is not only sweet but she is so helpful and such a partner in ministry.  I just adore her.  Well anyhoo...

They experienced the same thing.  And if affected things.  But as soon as our new YP came in and started flowing with the CP, they teamed up and things went bonkers in both ministries.  The children's area has doubled, youth area has tripled in attendance.  It's amazing.  The YP and CP worked on totally renovating the youth/children's area.  They devised a set that would work for both of them.  And they worked on it night and day and created a masterpiece.  They went in together on so much equipment and stuff and they have everything top of the line in there now.  The share and work together and both of their ministries have exploded.

Contrast this other do-do bird who was doing his own thing and actually very resentful of the CP at the time whose only crime was being an extremely hard worker.

Just keep doing the great job you are doing, putting out the excellent level of ministry you are putting out and being loyal to your SP.  It will stand you in good stead come review time, and also in having favor with your SP in everything.  And I believe God will favor you with a new good YP.  I understand your pain, keep hanging in there!

Love,

Deanna
