What does the prayer ministry look like in your church? Our prayer teams are on a rotating schedule for Sunday mornings; for praying with people at the altar and for praying with the pastors before the service [they refer to themselves as the "pit crew"]; we also have two prayer captains "on call" during the week to pray over the phone or to come to people's houses and pray.
What days/nights do you have it on? Saturday nights; Tuesday-Thursday mornings
Who attends? Anyone who wants to attend!!! Staff members are required to attend Saturday prayer meetings; I'm not sure what the attendance requirements are for prayer team members - I think prayer captains are required as well [Not sure what the difference is between a regular member and a captain!]. We usually have between 15 and 20 people on Saturdays. The morning ones are led by the head of the prayer ministry; typically attended by women who do not have to be at work in the mornings...some of them from other churches as well.
Who runs the meeting? Tuesday mornings: the head of our prayer team; Saturday nights are on a rotating basis between prayer teams, deacons, and staff members. Emceed by one of our senior pastors [or one of us staffers if they are gone]
If it's you, what happens when you are on vacation or ill...who runs meeting then? We get a schedule WAY in advance [One schedule for January-June; a second schedule for July-December], and switch with someone else if we know we are going to be out of town. If we are sick or have a last-minute emergency, we call our senior pastor and let him know; then we try our best to switch. My pastor is pretty gracious when it comes to that, though - I've covered for him when he's been ill and he's also covered for me...everyone is really good about making sure it's covered.
What is the structure of your prayer meetings? I don't attend the morning meetings, but our Saturday ones are structured as follows [although we obviously leave room for the Holy Spirit to move!] 7:00 - 7:30 - Personal reflection...the lights are dimmed, praise and worship music playing; and it's time for people to come in and get in an attitude of prayer before we start. 7:30 - 7:45 - Worship 7:45 - 8:00 - Short devotional/teaching [done by whoever is on the schedule for that night] 8:00-8:30 - Pray according to what has been shared; and for whatever other things need to be prayed for. 8:30 - Close; go home
We are rarely actually done at 8:30, but we usually try to wrap up by 8:45-9:00 so that people can get a good night's sleep and get to church Sunday morning!!!
Puppetmaster, thank you for sharing. This is good information to have especially for small ministries who are transitioning to we're not small anymore ministries. ;)
