Since Cassandra brought it up, I thought I'd start a new thread. I wanted to ask...about this topic -- a very personal one!
She mentioned about a speaker suggesting not wearing thongs. Well, I thought I would ask your opinion on it. Obviously, I'm willing to give mine since I'm starting this thread and it would only be fair.
I have to admit, I used to crack up (pardon the pun!) about this topic. I used to think, "who in the world would want to wear these all the time?" I imagined them to be so uncomfortable and would even joke about it. Just the "idea" made me wince! Well, when I did a little "comedy routine" about it one night at women's ministries (with only ladies there of course) afterwards, one of our young college gals and her Mom got me a little surprise "gift" as a joke...a pair of thong underwear, with little smilies. They were cute, and yes, I did try them on and true to my thoughts I was like, "uh! this is so uncomfortable! WHO would want to do this all the time?" So...some time ago, dh bought me a pair of a different kind and I tried them on and again was like, "UH! THIS IS TERRIBLE!" Never wore them. (I only wore something like this occasionally as lingerie in the bedroom, not as a real "underwear" thing on a day to day basis though I do like all kinds of pretty stuff, just not that type.)
WELL.............surprise. Recently I got an outfit that truly will show terrible panty lines (if not wearing something like a thong) so, I got a pair of a totally different fabric...they are mesh like fabric. I'm telling you, the fabric thing makes ALL the difference. You cannot even feel them - at all. It's totally comfortable, in my opinion even more than regular underwear and I thought I would never say that. I mentioned this to one of the ladies and they told me that fabric makes a huge difference as does the "width" of the back. The skinny ones are much more comfortable, evidently.
Anyway, just thought I would pass on this valuable info if you have any interest in trying them if you have never -- or you need to get something like this to go under a particular outfit. Another thing I learned -- if you are tan, you cannot wear white underwear under white! I didn't know that til' this month! I am very tan at this point. The other day I wore white underneath my capris, and was like, 'Yuk! What's wrong?" The young lady that lives with us right now (Jeanne) told me that you can't wear white under white if you are tan -- it looks horrible. You have to wear flesh (tan) tone.
Cassandra, I never heard Lisa Bevere say anything about the thong thing as you did (that was very interesting to me) but I just have to question why anyone would make a comment (or spiritualize it if that's where she was headed) about what kind of underwear a person wears. I think it's good to talk about these things from a practical standpoint - what works, what doesn't. But to put some spiritual spin on it? I did have one woman infer in a group one time that she did not feel it appropriate for young, unmarried women to wear them. I just do not understand that rationale. I believe you should wear nice underclothes (whatever works for you) whether single or married. I think it would be pretty sad if the Lord expected unmarried women to wear boring underwear just because they were single. Even if dh is not around I like to look presentable, just for "me". Nobody sees my underwear but him, but if he wasn't around I wouldn't wear raggy stuff or anything. So why should single girls? I guess this woman thought it was too racy or something, but give me a break -- as long as they are not "showing" it to a guy, what's the big deal? It's no different than the type of bra they wear.
Okay, I'm off this topic, for now. I'm sure it got your attention.
Oh no, she wasnt being spiritual about the thongs lol! It was an all ladies deal and it was totally hilarious at that moment. She just took her liberty to say she wasnt going to start something with John she want willing to do all the time becuase they are so uncomfortable! (Maybe she didnt find the right kind) My dh has been buying them for me (becuase I showed some willingness to try them) but couldnt find any comfortable. So I left them for the bedroom as well. Did wonder about the width the other day. SO that makes perfect since and will be buying some again then to see if I can find some comfortable. You are right, some outfits are just "thong necessary" so I appreciate the info.!
I am also likeing camisoles! PRetty lacy ones under my blouses and jackets. (Not racy ones though) They make you feel so feminine. And the right undies (upper and lower) on all day can help the crockpot heat up! lol
I have chunked all but a few white old faithful ones (for that time of the month) I have been making a concious effort to buy pretty ones, even let dh pick them out --- he is so happy to cooperate too. Wonder why? Its almost some days like they know by what you put on what kind of day its going to end up being. haha
I found a happy compromise...it's sort of a cross between a bikini and a thong...they're very comfy and don't show pantylines.
My DH is very frustrating that way - he doesn't like buying me lingerie because he says, "I'd be buying it for me, not you, and that's not a real gift." Yeah, that's sweet, honey, but as I've told him, it would be for me, too! I mean, he's been my best friend since we were 16 years old (not that we discussed things like underwear before we got married, lol!) - I think he should be able to figure out my taste!! Oh, well - guess I'm on my own there...
One of my problems is that I'm still not at my goal weight, and the manufacturers apparently think that larger women don't have husbands who find them attractive in fancy lingerie. My best friend and I (she's a size 8/10) went out shopping once and she found a whole bunch of cute stuff on clearance in her size, but we found nothing in mine! And I'm only a size 18! It's shallow, I know - I should be losing weight primarily for my health, but a close second is being able to buy cute clothes and sexy lingerie!!
Okay Puppetmaster, tell me where to find the undies you describe. That sounds really great - pretty, and functional at the same time. Are they called a specific name and where do you find them?
I agree with you about the size thing - they need to offer more choices. You are right, and perhaps they don't think women who are a bit larger would want to wear the lingerie (because so many women are uncomfortable with their bodies, to begin with), BUT, I know what you say is true because when I was larger, I wore lingerie, and had a fantastic sex life. Just because someone is overweight (by any amount) doesn't mean that they aren't interested in these things, or that their dh has no interest.
I believe whatever stage we are in, we have to be confident - that's what the Lord has called us to be - and we can't wait til' we get to what we think is the "perfect" scenario to enjoy life, our spouse, etc. I enjoy things even more now, but I did not wait to get to a different point before taking joy in those things, otherwise we would have had a pretty boring life for a long time! That's just like I don't believe women should wait until they become what they consider their perfect size to buy clothes, shoes, etc. to make themselves feel pretty. You should do it all along the journey because you are worth it no matter what your size at the time.
I am not exactly "where I want to be yet" physically (still working on it) but I like to give myself lots of perks along the road to encourage myself. And I think everybody should do this. WE'RE WORTH IT! (Because He (the Lord) says we're worth it!)
Deanna, the undies I was talking about are at Lane Bryant...they're sort of a string bikini, but they give full "coverage." They're just on the regular underwear display table and they come in all sorts of colors. They're not really called anything specific, but they're Cacique brand (my favorite brand...cute, but well made and functional!!). Anyone who is smaller than a size 14 can probably find the same brand at Lerner's, the Limited, or even Victoria's Secret (all of those stores, plus Express and Bath & Body Works are owned by the same company and carry many of the same brands...I worked at LB for 2 months in college, before I decided that selling clothing was not the career for me!).
I am definitely all about treating myself well...fixing my hair, doing my makeup, and dressing nice...even though I weigh more than I should right now. I do a lot of thrift store shopping (not for lingerie, lol!) and have found tons of cute, CHEAP clothes that way. Last year right before Christmas, I got two dresses, a skirt/shirt set, and a button down shirt - all in a rich, velvety material in the perfect colors - for $20 for the whole deal. My best friend and I both grew up with little $$ in our families, so we have both perfected thrift shopping to an art - people at church are amazed at the outfits we find at thrift stores.
As one a tight budget, I too love consignment shops and thrift stores and yard sales. I find deals too. But I too prefer good, quality name brand undies. As a 14 Lerner was a hard fit for me. Other brands in a 14 would be snug so I'd have to do 16 in theirs but its a little loose. And whoever found a 15!? But in Lerner it did feel like their sizes were truer. (I hate that the most about clothes!lol) Anyhoo....
I am feeling better about my body, though I am still working on it. Until my husband just shows true horror and disgust I am going to quit berating myself to myself and him (which he genuinely detests and says so) and spend money on pretty things. And the thing about undies is they may cost $4-5 on sale and that is a cheap happy pickme up you know.
pink lacy boy cut boxer panties(some of my favorites) .................$6
Victoria Secrets Pear Glace Lotion.......................$12
1oz of pure, homemade fudge form mall bakery................$3.99
Smile on husbands face as he falls asleep.................priceless
I love the Victoria's secret vanilla fragrance. I wear it most times, or "Pink", also from VS.
Someone gave me some bath gel from bath and body works for Christmas...a board member's wife...and I can't for the life of me right this sec remember the name of it but it was AWESOME. I was dreading the end of the bottle. I think it might been moonlight path or something like that? Anyway, I definitely want to get that again. I fill my big tub up and put that in, and it's like a major escape!
Just a matter of personal preference and all, but I like lotions and body sprays alot better than strong perfumes. And VS and B&BW, even though they are pricier (unless you catch a deal) just last longer and smell better. Its worth the little extra. I found one at Walmart the other day that is some of the most expensive there and it smells good. Just clean.
Do you guys have any recommendations for ravor burn? I have not ever been terribly prone to it but here lately I am getting it every time I shave, but not immediately but the next day. SO I never shave on Saturday night becuase my legs will look horrible Sunday for church. Since we've been on a pampering kick lately maybe you gals know something that I can use or something I am doing wrong.
Yes, I do use dh razors because he only uses them once and then I get them. IS that the culprit? I've always done that. but thought that may be the first question.
Cassandra...honey...go get yourself a GOOD women's razor! I use either Venus Divine or Schick Intuition. Schick Intuition is nice because it's got a bar of moisturizing soap right on the razor (It seems really weird at first, but it is worth it!). A good razor definitely cuts down on razor burn and shaving accidents (my personal shaving problem - when I first started shaving in junior high, I swear people thought I was suicidal because of all the razor cuts all over my legs!).
But yes...definitely get your own razor and don't use your husband's! I used my DH's shave gel on my legs once, and it burned so bad, plus made me smell like a man for the rest of the day. We ladies are just more delicate than that .
I'm gone 3 days & now I can hardly keep up w/ you all. Some interesting discussins while I've been away.
I love V.S.'s Pear Glace. My favorite.
As far as thongs go, I don't do thongs. I've tried several types, but I've never found any to be comfortable. Dh loves them, so I've kept one pair for those special occasions.
You all will love this. There is one pastor (close to where I'm at) who has preached against women wearing panties w/ flowers on them. Can you believe that? No telling what he would think about thongs.
People do come up with the strangest ideas when they try to spiritualize things that shouldn't be spiritualized...
Flowered panties? So, how is he going to control that? Is he going to send the board to all the ladies' dresser drawers and have them search for the offending undergarments? I mean, I prefer black, silky and lacy for myself - not really into "girly" patterns with hearts or flowers...
I supposed I'd be labeled an occultist for wearing black, lol!!
Usually you have one or two things going on when a man is preachig stuff like that.
He's either been hurt and deeply offended by it (What has flowered panties ever done to him?)
Or he has a problem with them (oohh hoo cant get enough of your love flowered panties, can't get enough of your love) therefore better tell everyone to avoid them so I dont have to think about sister so and so wearing em'!
It never ceases to amaze me that people preach this kind of stuff in any other than a comical way. I put a lot of comedy into my messages, especially when just doing a women's event and I might do a whole section on women's underwear, or something that ladies can relate to. But only in a funny way.
Wouldn't you all just love to have 5 minutes with the "flowered underwear" preacher to find out, WHAT IS IN THAT LITTLE MIND OF HIS WHEN HE PREACHES SOMETHING SO RIDICULOUS?"
I know people who think thongs are sin really "crack" me up too. Sorry!!! COuldnt resist.
You were definately right about finding the right kind! I found some of the little thin ones with the thinner back, string like actually. Made all the difference in the world! Right on!
As long as I stick to solids and not flwers I should be ok. I wonder if polka dots are sin or not?
Cassandra
PS
I went and bout myself a good razor and some of that ladies shaving gel! Did great too. It was only like $5 I spent on myself. I need to cut me some slack!
So...since we're on the topic of ladies' undergarments...
Where do you all find your "cute" undergarments, other than stores where you're paying $7 - $8 a pair for them? I splurged awhile back and picked up 3-4 pairs of semi-cute panties at Lane Bryant, but that's not something I can normally do. Is there any hope for large-busted and bigger hipped women on a budget, or are we just stuck with the ace bandage bras and white grannie panties?
I have also been gone for a while. I have been so busy that I have been popping in but have not had much time to post. This conversation is hillarious. I cannot believe that someone wasted message time preaching against wearing flowered panties. If that were a sin, I am in big trouble. LOL. Cassandra you are so funny. Especially now that we can see your picture, I can just envision you typing and laughing.
I have never worn thongs, except the two that I have that go with lingerie. I guess maybe I have not found the right kind yet. I did not think that they were comfy at all. I am going to look for the kind that you described at Lerner puppetmaster. Those sound great!
I also love Victoria's Secret. The love spell lotion and body spray are my favorite. Digressing slightly, my youngest daugther's name is Victoria. She is 6. About a year ago she asked me, "Mommy, what is Victoria's secret?" I explained that it is a store that sells womens underclothes and perfumes and lotions. Then she asked, "No, but what is her secret? Do I have a secret too?" Dh and I just laughed an she let it go.
BTW Deanna, I have a permanent tan, and you are right. I never wear white panties under white. I buy flesh tone, or as close to it as I can find. It is hard to find flesh toned items when your flesh is almost the color of chocolate. (Ha, ha!) I am laughing, but I am serious.
I have been buying hte kind like Deanna talked about at WALMART! I am a 14 and they have sizes for me and there was a size bigger (panties are sized funny IMHO) But they are only $2.88 a pair. So I have been picking up a pair a week sometimes two pairs (a real splurge for me. I am a cheapo when it comes to buying stuff for me) Here's how cheap I have been. I buy panties, socks, bras and stuff with christmas money and birthday money. I am trying to stop that and buy them along the way for myself just like I would the kids. (Dh is as bad as me to by himself too). We just have lived off so little for so long. And its not easy now but I am getting out of my small mental box and if it takes buying cute panties for me to do that, then cute panties it is!
But honestly, The pair I bought jsut the other day with the string in the back was like wearing nothing! Totally recommend for those days you wnat to torment dh around lunch time and say "guess what I have on" knowing he has to wait until bedtime to see them.lol)
But anyway.... I found em at Walmart. (I love walmart!)
