I think that we, as the church, could take a lesson from Craig Ferguson of the Late, Late Show!
Now...I don't watch late night t.v. (I'm usually asleep by then, lol!), nor am I a fan of Britney Spears. But while all the other late night comedians were using Britney's head-shaving, rehab-entering antics of the past weekend as fodder for their monologues, Craig Ferguson refused to crack jokes about it. Why? Because this week just happens to be his 15-year sobriety anniversary!
He said, "I think it's incredible that I made national news for NOT making fun of somone," and "She is obviously not well, and I don't make jokes about sick people!"
Talk about a living example of "taking the log out of your own eye before taking the speck out of your brother's."
I don't know where Craig Ferguson stands as far as Christ is concerned...I've never even watched his show! But it made me remember, when I look at someone who is hurting and am tempted to gossip or snicker, "There but for the grace of God go I!"
I do think it's very sad about Britney. She's a very confused young lady and I hope some woman who is anointed and knows how to help her gets up close to her where they can minister to her. That's really what she needs...
I read this post yesterday. It was one of those "I don't really care, but I want to read all the posts today" kind of thing, but this one wouldn't leave my mind. We don't watch TV--can't justify the cost of cable and get no reception in our mountain town. So, I've never heard of Craig Ferguson. I've seen pictures of Britney Spears on those magazines at check-out counters. I had even seen the pic with her shaved head and mentally rolled my eyes. All that to say, I read your post and felt like I had a telephone pole in my eye. Wow. Mr. Ferguson acted out Christianity (Christian or not!) better than I did. Didn't like the "ouch" but obviously needed it. Thanks for the post.
